We are Sense International

Sense International works in partnership to provide services and raise awareness of the needs of deafblind people and their families so they can connect, participate and contribute to their communities.

Ana's story

Ana is fourteen years old and lives in Romania. She has Down's Syndrome and sight and hearing problems. When she first started school she was very withdrawn and exhibited challenging behaviour.

At the age of six, Ana had mobility problems and was not able to wash and feed herself or communicate with her family. When Ana was ten she was referred to a deafblind unit and after a thorough assessment with specialist staff, an individual rehabilitation plan was developed for her. Today Ana uses objects of reference to tell her family what she wants. She is given options and choices and this has dramatically changed her behaviour. She now enjoys playing with the other children in the unit and she loves playing in the ball pool. Ana's transformation has been extreme and her family life has improved as a result. Her mother is so grateful for the difference Sense International has made. Now when Ana is hungry she fetches the plate and when she is thirsty she fetches the bottle of water.
