Achievements

Sense International East Africa:
  • Helped to persuade the governments of Kenya and Uganda to recognise deafblindness as a unique disability.
  • Supported the nomination of two deafblind people to a national steering commitee on disability, where they can directly influence national level policies.
  • Set up home-based care programmes with eight partners in Uganda to help more than 100 deafblind children; and set up programmes with the government of Kenya.
  • Worked with the Kenya Institute of Education (KISE) to launch a two-year training programme for ten teachers of deafblind children, based on the curriculum developed by Sense International India.
  • Boosted the skills and effectiveness of the Uganda Parents with Deafblind Children Association and the Uganda Association of Deafblind People.
