Home-based support

Sense International East Africa brings specialist services to the places where deafblind people live through home-based care. This enables anyone affected by deafblindness to get the support they need — even those living in remote areas, those with limited mobility, and those with limited incomes.

Home-based services have benefits not only for deafblind people, but for families and communities, too. Experience shows that when a deafblind child learns successfully in the presence of his or her family, the family members are much more likely to have positive and supportive attitudes about their child's potential. This leads to better results and improves the family's ability to care for their child.

We have set up home-based care programmes with eight partners in Uganda to help more than 100 deafblind children; and we have set up programmes with the Government of Kenya.

In the next few years we would like to extend our home-based educational and vocational services to Tanzania, and to more areas of all three countries.
