Campaigning
In the past ten years, Sense International India has worked closely with the ministries of Social Justice and Empowerment, Education and Health, and with other relevant government bodies, to ensure that deafblindness is recognised as a distinct disability in policy-making.
This has made a dramatic difference in the ability of deafblind people and their families to receive education, social welfare, health and employment support from the government.
Thanks to the work of Sense International India, its partner organisations and other advocates, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment revised its Scheme of Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/Fittings of Aids/Appliances to include communication equipment for deafblind people, such as Braille attachments for telephones. Also, low income families can now receive equipment for free or at a reduced cost.
