Trek Turkey
The Trek Turkey Challenge will take place from 8–12 October 2008 along the Lycian Way in Turkey. The Lycian Way is a famous long-distance footpath on Turkey’s south coast and features in many of the world’s ‘Ten Best Walks’.
Ancient Lycia was once one of the richest and most densely populated areas of Turkey and you are bound to marvel at the natural history, ancient settlements and ruins as you make your way through this area.
This moderate trek follows the rugged coast, dipping inland into impressive mountains, summer pastures, deep forests and olive groves. Small bays and stunning beaches greet you around many of the bends and there will be plenty of opportunities for you to take a dip in what is arguably some of the most inviting waters of the Mediterranean. You can also look forward to an afternoon boat trip one day which will allow you to explore some of the ruins and castles located on the surrounding islands.
Long term supporter of Sense International, Anne Lamont, talks about why she has been trying to encourage people to join her in this European paradise:
"Taking part in one of the Sense International global challenges last year was one of the best things I have ever done; there was huge satisfaction in raising money and also in taking part in what was for me, a real physical challenge.
I also got to visit a Sense International supported kindergarten and meet some of the deafblind children. Everyone working at the kindergarten was clearly so committed to the children and despite the challenges of deafblindness, you could genuinely see what a difference Sense International is making to their lives; they get an education, their parents get support, they learn life living skills... Seeing this in person makes you understand the impact that fundraising has on Sense International and in turn, children like this.
I really wanted to get a group together to do a trip this year so that others could experience this same feeling of satisfaction and know that with a little effort, we can all make a big difference to the lives of people who really do need it. I chose Turkey for the amazing scenery, warm people and delicious food. I really look forward to the trek and in knowing that by bringing a group together I will be helping to raise so much more money for deafblind people than would have been possible on my own."
