When Sense International India started its work 13 years ago there was only one programme for deafblind people in the whole of India, which was supporting just 23 deafblind children. Since then our work has flourished and, by enabling deafblind people to make the transition from isolation and neglect to active participation in family and community life, our work continues to transform lives.

A hugely successful partnership with likeminded non-governmental organisations and the Government of India's ‘Education for All' programme have helped us to reach more than 30,000 deafblind children and adults. Through this partnership 1,500 government teachers have been trained on the identification and assessment of deafblind children in mainstream schools.

We are aiming to reach 70,000 deafblind people by 2017, and are striving to have at least one model service for deafblind people in every state, so that no deafblind person has to travel more than a day to get specialist services.

Sense International is currently undertaking a five year project funded by the European Commission. The main objective of this project is to develop four Regional Learning Centres across India, which provide information and support on deafblindness, and assist local organisations in developing services for deafblind people.
