Miguel was born 1990 in the city of Iquitos, Peru. He lives with his parents in the Pachacamac District of Lima.
Miguel's mother lost her first daughter Fiorella when she was two years old ( just days after Miguel's birth), following an epidemic of meningitis at the central hospital of Iquitos. Years later, doctors said the epidemic may have been the cause of Miguel's deafness.
At the age of eight, Miguel was diagnosed with bilateral hearing loss by an audiometrist. In 2004, doctors detected calcifications in his brain through an MRI scan at Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo hospital.
Miguel’s parents realised he required special education so they decided to move from Iquitos to Lima, where he soon began attending a special school.
Since this time, Miguel had attended various special schools and has begun to learn sign language in the last few months.
Since June 2014, Miguel has been taking part in a bakery workshop organized by Sense International Peru. He is learning various techniques in baking and pastry-making.
Through the program, Miguel - with the help of his parents - can prepare cookies, cupcakes, muffins and many other snacks. Miguel is excited and happy to be going out and meeting people every Saturday.
His mother Diana says:
"Miguel is happy, this programme is helping him a lot". His dad said "My son knows that he can have a proper job and learn the value of work. He is happy and his success is ours".
