Team Sense and Sense International at the DbI World Conference
2 June 2015
Sense International Romania hosted the 16th Deafblind International (DbI) conference from the 25 to 30 May. Four hundred delegates attended from over 40 countries.
We were delighted that the World Federation of Deafblind (WFDb) joined us at the conference and Deafblind International (DbI) held a joint meeting with their executive members.
Sense International wish to extend their appreciation to their many partners and delegates who made this conference possible, contributed freely and made the event the tremendous success it was.
There were many memorable moments and there will be conference proceedings available through the DbI website in due course. In the meantime perhaps some of these quotations give a flavour of the conference.
'I don't feel as isolated now'
'We don't want our past into the future but rather our future into our present'
'Communication is air and water'
'I thought I was an alien but then I realised there were other people on the planet with me'
We were particularly delighted that delegates commented on how inclusive the conference was. Delegates actively acknowledged the excellent access that had been provided. We would particularly like to thank Tony Best who led the scientific committee to produce a full and stimulating programme. Huge thanks to Tony and his team.
We were particularly delighted that our very own Cristiana Salomie Director of Sense International Romania received the Lifetime Achievement award from DbI. This is a massive achievement for Cristiana and reflects her dedication and hard work. Cristiana, over 14 years, has led a growing team to embed education for deafblind children in the Romanian curriculum, has developed and supported the screening of over 80,000 babies and Sense International Romania supports 800 children and families. Well done Cristiana and thank you to DbI for recognising Cristiana’s fantastic contribution to ‘our world’.
